About Edgewood
Edgewood United Church is part of the United Church of Christ, a denomination of about 6,000 churches nationwide (www.ucc.org). Edgewood was formed as an offshoot of The People’s Church in 1953. A small group began meeting in Marble School and then built the church on Hagadorn Road, which was then the far edge of the Lansing/East Lansing area.
Throughout its history Edgewood has focused on social justice and working for change in the community and in the world. Over the years Edgewood folks have been involved in building low income housing, advocating for health care reform, supporting the civil rights movement, pushing for open housing in East Lansing, advocating for gay, lesbian and transgender civil rights, and much more. Edgewood is an Open and Affirming, Just Peace church. Today, Edgewood has over 500 members and about 200 people who gather to worship on Sunday mornings. We are diverse in our membership, and members and visitors come from across the Lansing area. Edgewood folks also seek to deepen their personal faith lives, support one another in the church, and to have a good time together. Mission Statement Guided by the love of Jesus Christ, Edgewood United Church seeks to be a community of healing, hope, and hospitality for people of all nationalities, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, types of families, marital statuses, ages, and abilities. Indeed, we celebrate the diversity that God has created. Governance Edgewood has congregational polity. Congregation members make up the leadership of the church and vote to decide policy, elect leaders, and pass the budget. Pastors are called by a vote of the congregation. Edgewood has a constitution, bylaws, and standing Rules. An annual meeting is held each year to do the major business of the church, and the occasional congregational meeting, where members gather for other major decisions. The Church Council, which represents the congregation between annual meetings, comprises elected officers and at-large representatives. Edgewood has designated eight Teams to work on aspects of church life and leadership: Worship, Building and Grounds, Finance, Outreach Mission, Education, Congregational Life, Member Ministry, and Stewardship.
