Justice and Peace Task Force
Task Force Activities
In 2010-2011, the Justice and Peace Task Force
| Increased congregational interest in peace and social justice resulted in the formation of the Justice and Peace Task Force (J&P) in 2008. This task force serves as an advocate for programs that support justice and peace both at home and abroad.
Based on interests indicated in a congregational survey, the Task Force established working groups in the following areas: Health Care; Micro-finance (support for small businesses in developing countries); Women in the Global Industry; Economic Justice, including Trade Policies; Demilitarization and Support for the United Nations; Prison Concerns. The goals of the working groups are to inform Edgewood members and friends about opportunities for individual and collective efforts in these areas, contact and confer with public officials with regard to issues of concern, and work with and support organizations with similar goals. Several reports have been prepared providing websites and other sources of information on advocacy groups, such as the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) and Kairos (Canada). Activities have included: sponsoring forums; collecting signatures urging Congressional investigation of torture of prisoners and the use of cluster bombs by U.S. military and other agencies; visitations to the offices of politicians to express concerns about government programs or lack thereof; public displays, including Tents of Hope (support for refugees in Darfur) and Eyes Wide Open/Boots on the Ground (the costs, both human and economic, of war); and participation in demonstrations for peace sponsored by the Friends, GLNAWI, the Peace Education Center, and other organizations. The Task Force encourages Edgewood members and friends to participate in existing working groups, and/or to establish new ones in their areas of interest. See Edgewood's Just Peace Covenant. |
